To create a series of three murals for an interior hall at a leading furniture design company, Seattle artist, Karin Schminke, wanted to bring the outdoors into the office environment. As the finished art was to be 90'' to 100" wide, she set out to break up the image so that it would contain areas of flat space next to areas with the illusion of deep space. The triptych, or three panel format, was chosen to accommodate this approach.
Working from her original photographs, Schminke chose images for their pictorial as well as graphic qualities. Other elements were chosen for their abstract qualities to contribute an ambiguity to the piece, allowing for new discoveries for those who will see the work over an extended period of time.

In the finished works, layers of forests, textures and colors combine to create an abstracted, flattened space in the outer panels of the triptych. In the center panel of each triptych, fields, lakes or streams are presented to create a sense of deep three-dimensional space, creating an illusion of depth and expanded space within the hallways. At the top edge a rectangle of sky helps integrate the three panels and further suggests the opening up of space.
