KwikPrint Workshop

In May 1996, Unique Edition™ members Karin Schminke, the late Judith Moncrieff and Helen Golden gathered at Golden's studio in Palo Alto to experiment with a non-silver photo process product called KwikPrint. KwikPrint is a spreadable photo-sensitive emulsion. It was mixed with various types of water soluble paints to add color. After experimenting with various papers and coating (left), 30 x 44 sheets of paper were painted with various colors of acrylic paint and hung outside to dry.

Above, Schminke applies the KwikPrint emulsion on top of an acrylic-painted paper, while Golden exposes a print under photo flood lights. Exposure and color tests were performed for all prints. In the second image above, Schminke does an impromptu exposure test using the sun. To create the negatives for this photo process, 36" ink jet printers were used to print the large negative images onto ink jet acetate. These were then taped to the prepared KwikPrint substrate, covered with plex, and exposed.

After exposure, the acetate negative was removed. To develop the image, water was gently washed over the emulsion. The KwikPrint color washed away in the areas covered by the dark parts of the negative.

Karin Schminke, Judith Moncrieff and Helen Golden with some of the KwikPrint substrates created. These substrates were later prepared for ink jet printing with a precoat to allow printing of additional imagery on the surface of the print.
