To create the sense of an icy sub-zero morning, artist Karin Schminke began by painting rice paper with cobalt blue watercolor. To add color and texture to the sky area of the image, the dried blue paper was collaged onto a 30 x 30 piece of Tableau paper.

A coat of gesso was added to the dried collage to cover the bottom two thirds of the image and drybrushed into the sky area. Pearlescent paint was mixed with acrylic medium and spread over the entire image to create an icy effect.

To prepare the substrate for passing through the printer, high bumps in the collage were flattened with a hammer and an inkjet precoat was applied. A variety of tree and texture images from Schminke's original photographs were combined in Photoshop to create the image to be printed. The collage was attached to a larger sheet with double-stick tape and fed through a large format ink jet printer to receive the final image.
