Experimental
Printmaking Process "Malachite"
The key image for Malachite is this photo of windswept trees taken near Paradise on the slopes of Mt. Rainier near Seattle. After printing a high constrast version on the Epson 3000, colored pencils were used to increase the texture on the trees. The pencil marks were lifted in Photoshop, duplicated, and recolored to emphasize the drawn marks. Various papers were handpainted with watercolor, scanned on an Epson 836 scanner and added as layers to create additional texture and color. A cloud image was used as a transparent element at the top of the trees. In the lenticular image, these clouds fade in and out, like smoke or fog on the mountaintop . An original photo of evergreen trees was altered in Photoshop to create simplified tree shapes for the deepest space of the image. These are obscured as the cloud forms fade in. Shown below is a detail of the final image printed on the Roland HiFi Jet. The vertical lines show the color variations experienced when viewing the image through the lenticular lens.
